MS & MBA application fees: what 1,671 programme records across six countries reveal
Before applying, students should check the actual application fee, fee waiver rules and whether the fee applies to their programme and applicant category. In an AdmiScan research subset of 1,671 active, unexpired and paid-report-ready MS/MBA records, only 801 had both a nonnegative numeric application fee and a linked HTTPS evidence source (47.9%). The other 870 should not be assumed free.

Application fee evidence by country
These percentages measure documentation coverage within this selected AdmiScan subset, not the share of all programmes in a country that charge an application fee. Country populations have different sizes and selection criteria. Fees are not converted between currencies.
| Country | Ready records | Numeric fee + source | Coverage | Recorded zero | Unresolved fee |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Australia | 343 | 163 | 47.5% | 0 | 180 |
| Germany | 176 | 75 | 42.6% | 14 | 101 |
| Ireland | 272 | 265 | 97.4% | 0 | 7 |
| Netherlands | 102 | 17 | 16.7% | 1 | 85 |
| United Kingdom | 653 | 178 | 27.3% | 157 | 475 |
| United States | 125 | 103 | 82.4% | 13 | 22 |
| Six-country subset | 1,671 | 801 | 47.9% | 185 | 870 |
One programme record counts once; the population includes both MS and MBA degrees. Source URL presence is a minimum evidence check, not a fresh manual re-verification of every programme's 2027 fee policy.
What should students conclude?
Missing does not mean free. The 870 records without both a numeric amount and HTTPS source are gaps in this dataset. Ask the university or check the live application portal rather than treating an empty fee field as zero.
Recorded zero does not guarantee every applicant pays zero. The 185 zero-amount entries are recorded programme-level observations and might depend on applicant category, pathway, application portal, timing or future policy revisions.
Country-level comparisons cannot predict your actual bill. Ireland has 265 sourced numeric entries out of 272 records in the research subset, while the Netherlands has 17 out of 102. That describes this dataset's documentation, not national application-fee norms or university quality.
Verify before paying. A small number of ineligible, unaffordable or incorrectly selected applications can cost money. Official admission criteria, full tuition costs and exact current application fees should inform the shortlist before students spend.
Official university policies: two concrete examples
As examples of source-specific rather than countrywide rules, the University of Reading states that it does not charge an application fee for its master's programmes, and the University of Surrey states that it does not charge for postgraduate applications. These current official pages illustrate why the exact application route matters; they do not establish policies for every UK university or every later intake.
Methodology, scope and reproducibility

global_programsjoined to the derivedglobal_program_decision_readiness_vby programme ID. - Eligibility: Country is USA, UK, Germany, Australia, Ireland or Netherlands;
is_active = true,catalog_ready = true,verification_status = VERIFIED,verification_expires_at > snapshot timeandfull_paid_report_ready = true. - Documented fee:
application_fee_amountis numeric and at least zero,application_fee_currencyis present, andapplication_fee_source_urlbegins with HTTPS. - Separation: Count numeric fees above zero separately from recorded zero amounts; treat nonqualifying records as unresolved rather than free.
- Limitations: Selection is nonrandom and different by country. A source link alone does not prove that a fee is unchanged for Fall 2027, that all categories of applicants pay it, or that all source pages remain current. This report measures evidence coverage—not actual admissions outcomes or average prices.
Put the evidence to work before paying university application fees
AdmiScan helps review actual programme eligibility, costs, deadlines and missing evidence. The audit supports your decision, but it cannot promise admission or guarantee a university's application fee.
