AdmiScan Research · 2027 Admissions Reliability Index
Same University, Different Rulebook
Programme-level admission requirements varied at 93.28% of multi-programme universities in AdmiScan's measured 2027 catalogue.
AdmiScan analysed 5,342 active, catalogue-ready Master's and MBA programme records across 517 universities in six countries. Among the 357 universities with at least two programmes represented, 333 had more than one normalized admissions-requirement profile.

The variation survives field-by-field validation
The headline result was re-tested after normalizing structured arrays and separating admissions requirements into five dimensions. This reduces the risk that the result is merely a formatting or storage artefact.
| Requirement dimension | Universities with variation | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Prerequisites / transcript requirements | 314 of 357 | 87.96% |
| Academic / background requirements | 303 of 357 | 84.87% |

| Work-experience requirements | 256 of 357 | 71.71% |

What “different rulebook” means
A university counted as varying when at least two represented programmes produced different normalized profiles in academic background, English, prerequisites, test policy or work-experience requirements.
What the study does not measure
The study does not rank universities and does not estimate acceptance probability, selectivity, programme quality or whether a university has made an error.
The pattern appears across all six measured countries
Country percentages should be read with their denominators. France and Ireland have smaller university samples in this release than the USA, Germany or the UK.
| Country | Universities with variation | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Australia | 20 of 20 | 100.00% |
| France | 5 of 7 | 71.43% |
| Germany | 81 of 92 | 88.04% |
| Ireland | 7 of 7 | 100.00% |
| UK | 53 of 53 | 100.00% |
| USA | 167 of 178 | 93.82% |
Why programme-level verification matters
University-wide graduate guidance can establish minimum requirements, while individual programmes may add or change requirements. Official university guidance independently reflects this distinction.
- Stanford Graduate Admissions states that application deadlines and supplemental requirements vary by programme.
- University of Iowa Graduate Admissions notes that programmes and departments may have additional requirements beyond Graduate College minimums.
- The University of Queensland directs postgraduate applicants to programme pages for specific entry requirements.
Methodology
The measured population contained 5,342 active, catalogue-ready programme records across 517 universities in Australia, France, Germany, Ireland, the United Kingdom and the United States.
The within-university analysis included only universities with at least two represented programmes, leaving 357 universities. Array fields were sorted before comparison so ordering differences did not create false variation.
Academic/background, English, prerequisite/transcript, GRE/GMAT/aptitude-test and work-experience dimensions were normalized and tested independently before the combined requirement profile was evaluated.
The experimental equal-weight composite explored during analysis is intentionally not published because its weighting has not been externally validated.
What applicants should do differently
- Identify the exact programme, not only the university.
- Verify accepted academic backgrounds and prerequisites.
- Check the programme-specific English and test policy.
- Check work-experience requirements where applicable.
- Keep the official programme source used for the decision.
